Web 2.0 Definitions

  • user-generated content: various types of publicly-available media content that are produced by end-users
  • long tail: a retailing concept describing the strategy of making a large number of unique items in relatively small quantities available, rather than focusing on making a ton of a few specific items available
  • network as a platform: the concept of using a network as an engine for other media, portals and communicative tools
  • folksonomy/collaborative tagging/social classification/social indexing/social tagging: a classification system that comes from the practice and method of collaboratively creating and managing tags to annotate, label and categorize content
  • syndication: making website material available to multiple other sites
  • mass collaboration: a form of collective action that happens when large numbers of people work independently on a single project, often modular in its nature, and the collaborative process is mediated by the content being created
  • computer-supported collaboration (CSC): research that focuses on technology that affects groups, organizations, communities and societies
  • hosted services: traditional IT functions made available over a network
  • social software: a computer-mediated communication involving a range of software systems that allow users to interact and share data
  • video-sharing sites: websites that allow users to upload, share and view videos online
  • wikis: simple web pages that groups of people can individually edit in a collaborative effort
  • blogs: types of websites--often personal--in which the user posts regular entries of various content for various purposes
  • mashup: a web page or application that combines data or functionality from two or more external sources to create a new service; involves easy, fast integration to produce results that were not the original reason for producing the raw source data
